IMPACT TESTS WITH SINGLE OR MULTI IMPACTORS USING A GAS GUN TO REPRODUCE IEDs’ AND UNCOMMON THREAT

Jerome Mespoulet, Hakim Abdulhamid, Paul Deconinck

Abstract

This paper deals with the ability to launch single impactor, sometimes with controlled angles, or synchronized multi-fragments using guns so as to reproduce Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDS) threats. This is done for a wide range of materials from aluminum and steel (light weight tactical wheel vehicle or fragments in detonation chamber [1]) to tungsten heavy alloys (rear face of heavy vehicle, hypervelocity events or hydrodynamic experiments [2][3]). Velocities spectrum is relatively large and englobes aeronautical subsonic regime (<300m/s), common ballistic regime (300-1400m/s) or warheads and hypervelocity regimes (>1400m/s).
