Waterborne Polyurethane Dispersions—The Key Tool for Today's Coatings Chemist in Product Development
Abstract
Waterborne polyurethane dispersion chemistry, although considered a benchmark for general coatings performance, nevertheless must prove itself worthy and capable of consideration for new coatings applications. The market challenges are many; for example, the do it yourself (DIY) market appears to be ideal for one component (1K) polyurethane dispersion chemistry; in contrast, the so-called industrial coatings market has significantly different performance requirements and 1K ambient cure chemistry may require extension into additional curing mechanisms to build molecular weight, crosslink density, and overall coatings performance. Today's lecture will consider new advances in both areas with attention to polymer design and paint formulation.
