Abstract

This paper presents a hybrid wave propagation model employing the global matrix method and the local interaction simulation approach. The global matrix method is used to accurately calculate the displacement field produced using a directional piezoelectric transducer. The local interaction simulation approach is used to numerically simulate the wave propagation resulting from the actuator and its interaction with the damage features and boundaries of a plate structure. Results from the hybrid model are compared with experimental measurements for an aluminum plate with damage in the form of a through-thickness hole. The model is then used to simulate guided wave interaction with simulated impact damage in a cross-ply laminate.
