Multi-Sensing SMART Layer® Technology for Vehicle Protective Systems

S. BEARD, P. POLLOCK, S. DAS, R. BRENNAN

Abstract

This paper presents the application of SMART Layer® Technology for in-situ assessment of the health of ceramic/composite panels used in protective systems. The work builds on previous studies to integrate sensors into the plate manufacturing process, and addresses issues such as ingress/egress of wiring and sensor survivability. An embeddable structural health monitoring system that could be seamlessly integrated into a semi-automated manufacturing process for protective systems was developed. Multiple sensor types and monitoring modes were integrated, including passive impact monitoring, electro-mechanical impedance measurements for sensor self-diagnostics, active ultrasonic scans for damage detection, and static strain measurements. Both low velocity and high velocity ballistic impact tests were conducted, and results are presented and discussed.
