Abstract

Barely visible impact damage in a layered composite plate is investigated. Two experimental approaches, based on nonlinear acoustics, are applied for impact damage detection. The Local Defect Resonance method and the Second Harmonic Identification Technique are used to reveal the damage. A low-profile piezoceramic stack actuator is applied to excite the plate and a scanning laser vibrometer is used to acquire response signals. The effectiveness of damage imaging and practical aspects of applying the presented techniques are demonstrated and discussed.
