Distributed Sensor Network for Structural Health Monitoring of Ships

B. W. ROEDER, R. R. KLUG

Abstract

The Strain Acquisition and Monitoring System (SAMS), currently under development for the Navy, is a scalable network of distributed, low cost, miniature strain sensor nodes that acquire and relay strain data to a strain data monitor user interface. The SAMS architecture significantly reduces the amount of cabling required to instrument structures of interest, is tolerant of EMI, and is capable of running indefinitely without batteries. In this paper, we present the results of the research and development of a preliminary prototype SAMS that was successfully demonstrated to the Navy as a proof of concept.
