Abstract

In this paper, a scheme of the discrete element method (DEM) for numerical simulation of three-dimensional (3-D) impact problems including elastoplastic deformations and severe damages is proposed. Based on the basic principles of continuum mechanics, a 3-D DEM framework is established for modeling the elastoplastic behavior of solid materials. Failure criteria are introduced for modeling the transformation from continuum to discontinuum. The numerical results obtained by the proposed scheme agree well with those obtained by the finite element method and the corresponding experiment respectively, which proves the feasibility and the reliability of our scheme.
