Validation of a Cellular Micromechanical Model

A. KARAKO, J. FREUND

Abstract

Heterogeneity in cellular structures has obviously a crucial effect on strength. Considering the fact, a micromechanical model employing heterogeneous specimen geometry consisting of hexagonal cells has been generated. In order to describe the mechanical behavior of each individual cell wall, elastic Bernoulli beam model is utilized. The model uses two parameter statistics for cell wall length and thickness, i.e. mean value and standard deviation. By means of the micromechanical model, virtual experiments for plane stress state are carried out. In the meantime, physical experiments for various honeycomb cores are conducted in order to compare and validate parameters of macroscopic constitutive equation obtained through virtual experiments.
