In this work, finite element-based composite free size optimization
methods are applied to design plies for a composite plate considering
structural and manufacturing design criteria. Structural criteria applied
include static strength, stability, damage tolerance, and bearing-bypass
strength at bolted joints. Manufacturing criteria applied include ply percentage,
symmetry, and consecutive ply count, and ply drop rate. A
systematic optimization study shows the effect of varying the ply-drop
rate on resulting ply shapes and weight.
