Technological Innovation and Brand Building of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Vegetable Balsam Pear for the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes: Based on the Intellectual Property Protection

Abstract


Innovation-driven development, brand building and intellectual property protection are national strategies. The root, vine, leaf and fruit of balsam pear (Momordica charantia L.), are all medicated to prevent and cure diabetes. A similar insulin-like substance contained in extracts of bitter melon, and wash creosote (cics), a combination of flavonoids from balsam pear and deoxynojirimycin from mulberry leaves, have obvious hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and other effects. This paper describes the balsam pear and its medicinal value, and studies the balsam pear intellectual property protection of national patents, new varieties of agricultural plants, geographical indications, trademarks, biological genetic resources, traditional knowledge, etc. The paper explores its related strategies, puts forward some suggestions.
