Abstract

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) products are utilized in the aerospace industry to provide high specific stiffness/strength. Tacit knowledge of experts acquired from their experiences and insights is required to produce the complex shaped and high quality products. The CFRP products are manufactured in a similar manner to the traditional Japanese crafts such as bows, fabrics, and plates. Due to prolongation of acquiring the skills of experts, reduction in manufacturing cost, enhancement of functionality in manufacturing machines, and the change in work values of young generation, we face the serious problem on the development of human resources; i.e., the number of experts in a company decreases, leading to the deterioration of Japanese manufacturing competitiveness. Therefore, it is significantly important to prepare educational guidance to learn the skills of experts. Also, the educational scheme to expand the number of experts needs to be organized through joint efforts between industry and academia. The educational scheme for composite processing needs to be established to expand the number of experts and to overcome the difficulty of quality control. In this paper, we propose the educational aid for the trimming and hole-making operation of autoclave technology to effectively improve the skill of workers. Trimming by power tools such as grinders and sanders is crucial to satisfying the required shapes and dimensions of CFRP products. The training aid for trimming translated from the skill of an expert is prepared and analyzed to identify the relationship between work and skill.
