Effect of HE Grain Size on Shaped Charge Jets

WERNER ARNOLD, THOMAS HARTMANN, ERNST ROTTENKOLBER

Abstract

The effects of the detonation front roughness on the liner of a shaped charge was investigated in an experimental program. Three batches of the PBX KS32 (HMX/HTPB 85/15) with different distributions of the HMX grain size were manufactured and tested in an experimental program. A first test series regarded the roughness of the indentations on copper plates caused by the detonation front. In a second series, specially designed shaped charges filled with the different HE batches were fired in front of FXR and were evaluated with regard to tip velocity, jet breakup, jet length and particle drift. The tests revealed a distinct influence of the HE grain size on the jet quality and especially on jet breakup and cumulative length.
