Hypervelocity Oblique Impact of Spherical Projectile on Thin Walled Targets

DHARMA TEJA KAMBAM, AZIZUDDIN IMTIAZ, M. S. MAHESH

Abstract

Angle made by the axis of spherical projectile with the normal to the surface of the target is called angle of obliquity. The angle of obliquity at which the projectile rebounds or moves off the target is called critical ricochet angle and this phenomenon is termed as ricochet. In the present paper the phenomena of ricochet is studied under velocities such as 1 km/s 2 km/s and 3 km/s, considering targets of thicknesses 1mm, 3mm and 5mm with projectile of 6mm diameter. ANSYS Autodyn is used for numerical simulation of impact event. The strength and damage characteristics are inculcated using Johnson Cook material and failure models. Some interesting observations are made which will be discussed further with the help of graphs plotted using MATLAB. Lagrangian mesh with adaptive meshing is considered to capture the information precisely during excessive deformation.
