Abstract

Using smooth-bore gun to launch projectile fragments with different muzzle velocity and shapes, the characteristics of the fragment velocities changed from the distances were achieved by velocity measurement system. The velocity attenuation coefficient and the air drag coefficient of fragment with different shapes were calculated based on the theoretical model and experiment results. The results show that the velocity-hold capacity of spherical fragment is better than cylindrical fragment and cuboidal fragment. The velocity attenuation coefficient and the air drag coefficient are related to the muzzle velocity. The variation of air drag coefficient has an opposite tendency to the muzzle velocity in the range of 1300 to 2100 meters per second.
