In-Flight Spin Measurement of High Velocity Projectile Using Infra-Red Imaging Technique
Abstract
In the present study, a novel methodology for the measurement of spin of canon launched high calibre supersonic projectile using the techniques of high speed Infra-Red(IR) imaging has been presented. It has greatly reduced the tactical disadvantages of conventional painting method of synchro-ballistic spin measurement. The nubs on the projectile surface get heated due to friction with the inner surface of gun barrel during in-bore motion. The heated nubs act as the marker for spin measurement. Spin value measured using this methodology is found to be in good agreement with theoretically estimated spin value.
