A Fast Running Model for IED Disruption
Abstract
ABSTRACT: This paper describes a novel approach taken to modelling the water-jet disruption process for neutralising improvised explosive devices (IEDs). QinetiQ’s proprietary Eulerian hydrocode, GRIM, has been used to identify methods of generating fast-running models of water-jets. Experimental data from energetic trials conducted by Dstl have driven model optimisation to simulate on-target effects of explosively driven water-jet disruptors. These first generation models for improvised explosive device disposal (IEDD) have made significant progress in predicting the impulse delivered to a target and the penetration performance. These models will assist the development of a fastrunning IEDD analysis tool which will aid the design and evolution of current and future disruptors.
