RECONSTRUCTION OF DATA FROM TABULAR FIRING TABLES FOR TUNING FCS BALLISTIC SW

Vladimir Cech

Abstract

For FCS ballistic SW tuning, it is necessary to use real information and data valid for the supported barrel weapon system. This information can be found in the corresponding Tabular Firing Tables (TFTs). The basic problem is that the data in TFTs contain printing errors and are rounded too roughly. This means that without their approximation they cannot be used directly to tune ballistic SW. Unfortunately, most TFTs do not contain all the necessary data for tuning. These are mainly TFTs for direct fire at ground targets, therefore we have chosen as an illustrative example the 12.7 mm Heavy Machine Gun M2HB and cartridges with Ball M2 or AP M2 projectiles. The article uses an original procedure for reconstructing the data needed for tuning. In addition, an approximation of the zero yaw drag coefficient cD0 for the above-mentioned projectiles is presented.
