NUMERICAL STUDY ON TANDEM SHAPED CHARGE AGAINST DIFFERENT GENERATIONS OF ERA
Abstract
TDW patented in 1974 a solution 1 using a precursor charge neutralizing the ERA protection by initiating the explosive cassette, so that the main shaped charge can now penetrate through the main armor with limited disturbance. A theoretical study of designing a small-caliber TSC warhead by Ling et al.2 reviews relevant design aspects. In this article, we choose a different approach. We created a generic tandem shaped charge to use as reference. Then we used recent development in γ-SPH at ABSTRAO to numerically study the interaction of our reference TSC with each of the three generations of ERA. The principles of operation as well as mechanisms of defeating SCJ by various types of ERA modules were analyzed. Protection capability of different ERA armor solutions was compared. The effect of TSC attack angle and time delay on armor performance was determined.
