The Effect of Initiation and Liner Thickness on the Jet and Penetration Characteristics
Abstract
Six experiments were conducted using a constant volume 90% RDX explosive in order to study effects of three liner thicknesses and initiation at point and peripheral locations. The experiments were modeled using SCAN and BRIGS analytical software as well as numerical modeling using AUTODYN. The results appear to validate previous work on effects of liner thickness on jet and penetration characteristics. One of the main findings is that the particles in the front part of the jet, created by peripherally initiated charges comprise of several small and fast particles. Predicting the exact shape and velocity of these particles is very difficult.
