Innovative Course Correction Devices: MANEGE Program
Abstract
The field of flow control has witnessed an exponential growth in the last twenty past years mainly for aeronautical applications. However, few studies were dedicated to projectiles. Thanks to the support of the French MoD, the MANEGE applied research program has been launched in 2011. This paper presents a synthesis of works and results achieved through a close collaboration between ONERA, ISL and NEXTER Munitions. The primary objective was the acquisition of aeroballistics technological skills to support upcoming applications. For aero and spin-stabilized projectiles implementations, the investigations were focused on potential mechanical and fluidic actuators used in passive or active ways. Relevant actuators must present significant trajectory correction ability. Aeroballistics characterizations have been based on extensive numerical simulations supplemented with wind tunnel and flight tests. The MANEGE program will be concluded in 2016 by a real firing demonstration of a mechanical actuator acting on artillery shell deviation.
