Abstract

This paper reports a gyroscope-free inertial measurement unit (GF-IMU) built with four 3-axial accelerometers to directly measure the transversal acceleration as well as the angular acceleration and velocity of human body. This design achieves much lower power consumption and lower cost than traditional inertial sensor systems. It can be utilized to analyze the translation and rotation of human body for the purpose of gesture recognition and motion detection. The experiment result demonstrates the possibility of using this GF-IMU system to detect human hand motion.
