VAE Latex Technology in Elastomeric Coatings
Abstract
Vinyl acetate ethylene latexes have properties that make them advantageous for many different architectural coatings applications. These properties include, but are not limited to, low temperature film formation, scrub resistance, alkali resistance, and exterior durability. As a technology, they are cost effective. Additionally, over the past few years' worth of raw material shortages, the supply situation for vinyl acetate ethylene latex has been very stable. Acrylic and styrene acrylic latexes are the main latex technologies for elastomeric coatings, both for roofing and for vertical cementitious coatings. They provide the necessary balance of tensile and elongation, along with the elongation recovery, water resistance, wet adhesion, and weatherability demanded by this application.
