Abstract

The stability of flood prevention dams is critical for a reliable protection from catastrophic events. Graz University of Technology carried out a series of life-size experiments to determine the slope stability of flood prevention dams in the vicinity of a water power plant. A measurement program based on conventional geodetic techniques and fiber optic sensor was developed for the high frequent monitoring of the dam deformations. The measurement concept, the calibration of the fiber optic sensors and the comparison between the different measurement techniques are presented in this paper. We demonstrate that a precision of better than 7μm can be achieved with the fiber optic measurements based on FBG sensors. The high resolution fiber optic sensors complement the geodetic deformation measurements and enable detailed investigations on small-scale deformations caused by the creeping behavior of the dam.
