Damage Analysis of a Bridge Deck under the Impact of Massive Falling Cargo from Passing Truck
Abstract
The falling massive cargos impact can cause severe damage on bridge decks. However, such kind of researches and studies have been reported. In this paper, an accident of a falling massive cargo onto bridge deck from passing truck is investigated, which happened to a cable-stayed bridge with twin pylons, twin cable planes, composite deck and main span of 590m. The falling cargos are three 20-ton steel coils in a truck traffic accident, leading to serious damage to bridge deck. A series dynamic numerical simulation using a nonlinear finite element analysis program is conducted to investigate the bearing behavior and response of the RC bridge deck subject to massive cargos impact. The simulation result indicates that the main failure mechanism of the bridge deck is flexural-punching mode, and that both the local and global response are dominating during the collision. Furthermore, the punching strength of RC deck is evaluated by a dynamic loading analysis. The capacity analysis result shows that mixed mode will always govern the behavior of RC bridge deck within the impact energy range of massive cargos. The RC deck is not more robust than we expected when subject to large cargos impact. It is necessary to take measures to avoid such accident
