Investigation on the Thermal Behavior of Nitroguanidine, Potassium Perchlorate, Ammonium Perchlorate and their Mixtures by DSC and TG

Abstract


The thermal decomposition characteristics of nitroguanidine (NQ), ammonium perchlorate (AP), potassium perchlorate (KP), NQ/AP mixture, and NQ/KP mixture were studied using thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). TG showed that there were three weight loss processes for the thermal decomposition of the NQ/AP mixture and NQ/KP respectively. The first was ascribed mainly to the thermal decomposition of NQ, while the second and third were assigned to that of AP and KP respectively. The presence of AP and KP has little effect on the thermal decomposition process of the NQ component while the addition of AP and KP increases the temperature at which NQ exhibits an exothermic peak. In addition, the thermal decomposition of AP and KP appears to be retarded by the presence of NQ.
