Study on the Effect of the Outlet Angle of the First-row Side Holes on Muzzle Flow Field Characteristics

Abstract


A great amount of powder gas is ejected from the muzzle brake during shooting, which causes great harm to the operators and equipment behind the barrel. Since the energy of propellant gas passing through each row of side holes decreases, investigating the effect of the parameters of the first-row side holes of the muzzle brake on the overpressure behind the barrel is of great significance. Due to the lack of theoretical foundation in the design of baffles behind the first-row side holes, this study focuses on a 125 mm tank gun and a simulation is conducted on the influence of the inclination angle of baffles behind the first-row side holes on muzzle flow field. The simulation is based on Navier-Stokes equations, a high-precision AUSM+ discrete scheme, and a structural dynamic mesh generation technique. The results of the present research can provide reference for the design of the muzzle brake.
