Research Progress on Application of Refractory Metals and Superalloys in Gun Barrels

Abstract


With the continuous improvement of the performance of barrel weapons, the requirement for the erosion resistance of the gun barrel material is getting higher and higher. Therefore, research on the new erosion resistant material and its preparation process for gun barrel has become an important research direction of barrel weapons. Refractory metals and superalloys have high melting points and excellent high temperature properties such as mechanical properties, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, etc. Recently, with refractory metals and superalloys becoming a major research direction of materials, their application for barrel weapons has gradually become a research hotspot. The performance requirements of refractory metals and superalloys in gun tube applications are summarized in detail. Meanwhile the research progress of their performance and applications in recent years is reviewed. On this basis, the progress of the research group focusing on the application of superalloys for gun barrels is mainly reported. It also pointed out the challenges that need to be faced in the protection of gun barrels by using refractory metals and superalloys, and prospects for future development.
