Projection Criteria for Insensitive Munitions and Hazard Classification
Abstract
The origin of projection criteria for Insensitive Munitions (AOP-39) and Hazard Classification (UN Orange Book) was investigated. Current distance-mass relations were reproduced with TRAJCAN trajectory analysis by using launch energies of 8, 20 and 79J and calculating the maximum impact distance reached by a natural steel fragment launched from 1 m height. The results show how distances would vary with assumed fragment shape and material. It was also observed that at the maximum throw distances, the impact energy is generally much smaller than the launch energy. This led to the development of new distance-mass relations that are based on the aforementioned energy criteria at 15 m impact and beyond, rather than on launch energy.
