Notched Composite Laminate Design for Improved Compression Strength Using Non-Standard Angles and Customized Stacking Sequence
Abstract
This paper compares the use of four standard ply angles [0°, +45°, -45° and 90°] in composite laminate design with non-standard ply angles for reduced ply thickness and improved notched compressive strength. This paper describes strength improvement through customized stacking sequence by placing higher-angle plies on the surface and lower angle plies at the core. Open-hole compression testing shows customized stacking sequences improve open-hole compression strength of both standard and non-standard ply angle designs by up to 33%. This improvement linearly decreases with surface ply angle.
