Progressive Failure Analysis of Composite Countersunk Bolted Joints Tests Using an Energy Based Continuum Damage Model
Abstract
Progressive failure analysis of composite bolted joint specimens with countersunk fasteners is presented. The progressive failure analysis uses an energy based continuum damage model for material stiffness degradation under three-dimensional states of stress. The material model is implemented as a user defined material UMAT subroutine for use with the ABAQUSâ„¢ finite element software. The developed methodology was validated using open-hole tension tests results, then used to predict progressive failure of bolted joints. Model predictions are compared with previously obtained experimental test results. The results indicate the 3-D CDM model can predict the load to failure in the countersunk bolted joints.
